10 Facts about J.S. BACH
(in honor of his birthday March 21, 1685)

1. Johann Sebastian Bach was born 326 years ago in Eisenach (Thuringia), Germany.
2. He was a composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist.
3. He came from a family of accomplished musicians, beginning with his great-grandfather who was a professional violinist.
4. Though best known for his virtuosity and compositions on the organ, his first music lessons were on the violin.
5. He became an orphan at the age of 10, first losing his mother and then his father less than a year later.
6. He had twenty children (seven with his first wife and thirteen with the second).
7. Few of Bach’s works were published in his lifetime.
8. Bach was not recognized as one of the greatest composers of all time until the 19th century when Mendelssohn and Schumann applauded his genius.
9. Translated into English, BACH means STREAM (ruscello/torrente).
10. Bach died on July 28, 1750.
