 CONDITIONALS/I WISH/IF ONLY

 “Vorrei che tu rimettessi in ordine la stanza”.
Ricordo che quando mia madre mi diceva questa frase, significava che avevo dai 10 ai 15 minuti di tempo per mettermi in azione prima che si scatenasse l’inferno.
“Vorrei che tu non facessi tardi”, invece, corrispondeva all’ordine categorico ed inderogabile di essere a casa per le 11.
Generalmente il verbo condizionale esprime una richiesta, in alcuni casi però è solo un modo gentile per dare un ordine.
Se il vostro capo vi chiede “vorrei che ti fermassi in ufficio un’ora in più”, ad esempio, non è il caso di rifiutare. Se invece la vostra fidanzata vi dice: “Vorrei che tu la smettessi di fare lo scemo”, continuare a scherzare provocherebbe una reazione assolutamente disastrosa!

 EXAMPLE 1
I wish you were here.                                    Vorrei che tu fossi qui.
is more like the SUBJUNCTIVE:               è più come IL CONGIUNTIVO:
If you were here, I’d be happy.                     Se tu fossi qui, sarei contento.
(I want the situation to be different.)        (Voglio che la situazione sia differente.)

I wish you would come here.                           Vorrei che tu venissi da me.
is more like the IMPERATIVE:                       è più come L’ IMPERATIVE:
(I want you to do something: come here!)    (Voglio che tu faccia qualcosa: vieni qui!)

 EXAMPLE 2
I wish you didn’t drive so fast.                     Vorrei che tu non guidassi così veloce.
is more like the SUBJUNCTIVE:                 è più come IL CONGIUNTIVO:
If you didn’t drive so fast, I’d be happy.      Se tu non guidassi così veloce, sarei felice.
(I want you to be different.)                          (Voglio che tu sia differente.)

I wish you wouldn’t drive so fast.                Vorrei che tu non guidassi così veloce
is more like the IMPERATIVE:                  è più come L’IMPERATIVO:
(I want you to do something: slow down!)   (Voglio che tu faccia qualcosa: rallenta!)

I wish you listened to me.                             Vorrei che tu mi ascoltassi
is more like the SUBJUNCTIVE:                 è più come IL CONGIUNTIVO:
If you listened to me, I’d be happy.              Se tu mi ascoltassi, sarei felice.
(I want you to be different.)                         (Voglio che tu sia differente.)

I wish you would listen to me.                             Vorrei che tu mi ascoltassi

If it stopped raining, I would go to the beach.         Se smettesse di piovere, andrei in spiaggia.
I wish it would stop raining.                                     Vorrei che smettesse di piovere.
I wish it stopped raining.

I wish it didn’t rain so much.                                    Vorrei che non piovesse così tanto.
I wish it were sunny.                                                 Vorrei che ci fosse il sole.
I wish it wasn’t raining.                                             Vorrei che non piovesse.
